Alexander Lodge Guest House Review
Alexander Lodge is one of the best B&B’s in the Bournemouth and Boscombe area with 5 star reviews across the internet. When you visit Bournemouth, make sure you stay here. Homely, warm, comfortable and full of character with an excellent caring host.
City breaks close to the beach are rare to find in the UK but Bournemouth has one. A very good one. Bournemouth has one of the best beaches in the UK with seven miles of golden sands. In 2018, it was actually listed as one of the world’s 25 most popular beaches. That’s some accolade!
When you take a city break in the UK and need accommodation, you have to decide where to stay. Book a hotel? B&B (bed and breakfast)? Holiday cottage? Air BNB?
You should also consider whether you want to be slap bang in the city centre or slightly out where the rates might be lower.
In Bournemouth, like everywhere else, Premier Inn and Travelodge get a lot of custom. They’re national brands, well known, you know what to expect from the beds and facilities. They’re good cheap hotels in Bournemouth and two of the best if you have a low to middle budget.
If you have a high budget, the Balincourt is a 5 star hotel in Bouremouth.
Popular hotels, outside of Premier Inn and Travelodge, are Cumberland Hotel, Hilton, Hallmark Hotel, Savoy Hotel, Royal Bath Hotel, Village Hotel, Trouville Hotel and Heathlands Hotel.

Alexander Lodge B&B
We decided to book a double room at Alexander Lodge because of the superb reviews from visitors. Booking.com gives a score of 9.8 / 10 based on 115 reviews, an Exceptional rating.
TripAdvisor lists the guest house as 5th out of 131 B&Bs / Inns in Bournemouth with a 5 out of 5 star rating based on 134 reviews. In fact, out of these 134 reviews, 98% give an excellent rating, 2% very good and absolutely no-one has rated average, poor or terrible. This is very unusual showing just how great this Bournemouth guest house really is.
Welcoming guests since 2011, each room has a flat screen TV, private bathroom, free WiFi and wardrobe. Our bedroom faced the street but there was absolutely no traffic noise – it’s a quiet street beautifully lined with trees.
Karen was a wonder host (we didn’t see Andy, her partner who has paintings hanging on the dining room walls) who made every effort to make us feel at home. Karen offered advice about where to visit and even left three bottles of beer and a birthday card in our room when she found out we were visiting to celebrate a birthday.
Large bottles of water are put into the bedroom each day for absolutely no charge.
Feeling peckish? Help yourselves to biscuits in the dining room at no charge.
It’s these little touches that set Karen and Andy’s B&B apart from a chain hotel.
When you stay at one of the best B&Bs in Bournemouth, based on visitor reviews, expectations are high.
The breakfast was fantastic with the most buttery croissants you’ll ever experience. You MUST have these at least once during your stay.
The English breakfast had everything you could ask for as a meat eater – eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, hash browns. You could tailor it to your tastes – Karen was more than happy to add more or take bits away. Want 10 sausages and 15 eggs? Karen will deliver.
Cereals, fruits, yogurts and toast with butter and jam were also all on the menu.
B&B with character
The building is full of character with old mosaic tiling, a showcase staircase and little quirks like low ceilings in the bathroom. A bit of a problem for someone who’s 6ft2 but workable.
Soft carpets throughout and vanilla scented wicks scattered on each floor further delivered a warm sense of home.
A good night’s sleep
Our spacious room had a very big bed, it felt bigger than a double. We had a very comfortable good night’s sleep on a mattress which wasn’t too hard or too soft. Just right.

Further afield in Dorset you have the likes of Durdle Door, a must see for hiking enthusiasts. Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks.
We went to Bournemouth Beach, Monkey World, Westbourne and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery. All are must see attractions.
The stunning Russell-Cotes Art Gallery is one of the last Victorian buildings in England. It houses a super collection of paintings and sculptures and really feels like you’re going back in time to the Victorian era. Awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, we spent 3 hours going round all the rooms. Leaflets and booklets provide plenty of historical information and there’s an excellent cafe with delicious cakes and drink.
Monkey World is what you’d expect, a wildlife park full of different monkeys. Spend a good 5-6 hours here, we promise you’ll love it.
You don’t need long in Westbourne. An area with independent shops and cafes, we stumbled across a few interesting interior design shops. If you have a couple hours spare, definitely make the trip to this quirky little neighbourhood.
Book your stay in Bournemouth. You’ll have a great time. We can’t wait to return to explore more of the Dorset coastline.
